Corinthian Column Gold Star Hall

What magnicent old buildings.  How old are they, do you know?

I would love to take a walk through the gardens there and then a stroll through the building as well.

My husband was in Iowa this past week, unfortunately only on the interstate.  One day we would love to take a leisurely drive through the states we used to travel through on our many trips to LA.

The Memorial Union opened in 1928, built as a memorial to Iowans who lost their lives in WWI.

It has had several major additions over the years, the most recent one being finished now, a large addition to the University Bookstore.   It, like all previous additions, is in the style of the original building.

That is some history, and a wonderful memorial to the fallen soldiers.

What is so important is that they have maintained the same architecture of the original buildings.  I am really impressed, especially in this day of errasing the old and building the new.  One of the most beautiful buildings in Toronto has had an addition and it is ultra modern.  What a way to take away from the beauty of the original building.

Actually, in the basement, they changed the cafeteria, removing the ancient heavy dark old oak tables, replacing them with birch and stainless steel. 

I don't get that upset over things, but my wife was tight-lipped for a while.   She was ecstatic when she discovered that they had kept the same furniture in the library for the past 30+ years.   

Good For you.  Sometimes it is so much better to be like a duck and let things "roll off you"!

Unfortunately I tend to be more like your wife....I really have a problem with change.

Now in the cafeteria, I can see the reasons for the changes.  At least they left the main structure the same and the memorial the same.

I really like the first photo in this set of the pillar and the work at the top of it. 

All of the photos are wonderful as usual.

That is a Corinthian column, they are the ornate ones with leaves.

Thanks for that.  I just think that the work is marvelous.
