 This guy didn't want his picture taken at all. I chased him round and round the stalk he was on for several minutes before getting this shot. I think the coloration is right pretty.....for a bug. 

Very colourful...6 legs of an insect but I don't see any antennae.  Maybe i need to put my glasses on?

How big was he?  What is he?  I know a bug but what kind?  LOL

That's the kind of bug I like - the ones that run away from me.

Hi Judy. This fellow is Oncometopia orbona (Broad headed sharp-shooter) and about 10mm (3/8") in length and is, I believe considered a "true bug". Didn't figure anyone would ask but ............
Family Cicadellidae (Leafhoppers)
Subfamily Cicadellinae (Sharpshooters)
Tribe Proconiini
Genus Oncometopia
Species Orbona
Notice the white area about 2/3 way along the blue of the wing?  This indicates a female. That white stuff hardens as she near egg laying time and once the eggs are laid she will scrape it off onto the area where she placed the eggs. It is a protective agent for the eggs...................and now you know more than you ever really wanted to know about these things.

I understand Jeanne. They have very good vision as you might guess from the eyes, and are very wary due to a lack of defensive ability.

I was going to say you were wrong, cicadas are in the order Homoptera, but something told me to check.    The order Homoptera is no more; apparently the cicadas are sufficiently like true bugs to fit in the Hemiptera.  Of course, I took my last course in entomology about 1970.

Go away for forty years, and they change everything on you.
