Those are pretty... What kind of lens are you using to get that much detail?

I've been trying to figure out how to get sharper, more detailed images out of my Sigma 70-300mm lens. I read that the ideal focal length is around 200mm. That's the shorter range I can set the focal length to take macro shots. I'll be looking forward to some rain soon so I can get out there and see if I can come close to what you captured.

Hi John...  As you probably know, I have the Nikon D80 but I just can't manage macro/close up type of photos with it as I don't have a macro lens and all are pretty blurriy with my other lenses.

So, these were taken with my Nikon Coolpix 8700 point and shoot!

The macro features on zoom lenses don't work as well as a dedicated macro lens.  And those are usually prime lenses, of a fixed length.

But with a tripod, zero wind, and the right light, you still might get some good results from your sigma.

Oh Pat!!!!  You need to get your best together and creat a callendar for your family (I want one too) and close friends.  These should be added for the month they were taken in!

Pat, I especially like the first one.  I think it could use a bit of brightening to make it even better, but it is really pretty.  I like the tulip too.

Oh, and a FYI for those without a macro.  If you can't afford one you can try what is generally called "the poor man macro".  You take your lens (only on a DSLR or regular SLR obviously) and turn it around backwards.  You won't get much DOF, but it works as a macro lens.  It is quite fun I think and what I did when I felt the need to shoot macro before I got mine (which I love).

I just tried it. Works great! I never would have thought to do that.

So, Scotty, tell us how you did it.

You can get a reversing ring actually so you don't have to hold it, but I always just held it.  Be warned, you'll want to know how to clean your sensor if you do it much...but you should know how to do that anyway IMHO. 

BTW, Scotty, you can buy a lens reversing ring that will keep it there for you.   One side of the ring has a regular lens mount, and the other side is threaded to screw into the filter threads of your lens.   Just be sure you get the one with the threads for your particular normal lens.

You are very gifted at taking close up photos.  I wish I could take pictures as good as these of flowers.  I have a macro lens, but I haven't played with it much.  It's an older vivitar lens.  You really should make a calendar out of these, they are simply gorgeous.
