The Theology of Resting in God
Oswald Chambers .... My Utmost for His Highest

"Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?" (Matthew 8:26)

When we are afraid, the least we can do is pray to God.  But our Lord has a right to expect that those who name His name have an underlying confidence in Him.  God expects His children to be so confident in Him that in any crisis they are the ones who are reliable.  Yet our trust is only in God up to a certain point then we turn back to the elementary panic-stricken prayers of those people who do not even know God.  We come to our wits' end, showing that we don't have even the slightest amount of confidence in Him or in His sovereign control of the world.  To us He seems to be asleep, and we can see nothing but giant, breaking waves on the sea ahead of us.

"...O you of little faith!"  What a stinging pain must have shot through the disciples as they surely thought to themselves, "We missed the mark again!"  And what a sharp pain will go through us when we suddenly realize that we could have produced complete and utter joy in the heart of Jesus by remaining absolutely confident in Him, in spite of what we were facing.

There are times when there is no storm or crisis in our lives, and we do all that is humanly possible.  But it is when a crisis arises that we instantly reveal upon whom we rely.  If we have been learning to worship God and to place our trust in Him, the crisis will reveal that we can go to the point of breaking, yet without breaking our confidence in Him.

We have been talking quite a lot about sanctification, but what will be the result in our lives?  It  will be expressed in our lives as a peaceful resting in God, which means a total oneness with Him.  And this oneness will make us not only blameless in His sight, but also a profound joy to Him.

MASTER, THE TEMPEST IS RAGING
(Click to hear music)

Master, the tempest is raging!
The billows are tossing high!
The sky is o'ershadowed with blackness,
No shelter or help is nigh;
Carest Thou not that we perish?
How canst Thou lie asleep,
When each moment so madly is threatening
A grave in the angry deep?

Refrain
The winds and the waves obey Thy will,
Peace, be still!
Whether the wrath of the storm tossed sea,
Or demons or men, or whatever it be
No waters can swallow the ship where lies
The Master of ocean, and earth, and skies;
They all shall sweetly obey Thy will,
Peace, be still! Peace, be still!
They all shall sweetly obey Thy will,
Peace, peace, be still!

Master, with anguish of spirit
I bow in my grief today;
The depths of my sad heart are troubled
Oh, waken and save, I pray!
Torrents of sin and of anguish
Sweep o'er my sinking soul;
And I perish! I perish! dear Master
Oh, hasten, and take control.

Refrain

Master, the terror is over,
The elements sweetly rest;
Earth's sun in the calm lake is mirrored,
And heaven's within my breast;
Linger, O blessed Redeemer!
Leave me alone no more;
And with joy I shall make the blest harbor,
And rest on the blissful shore.

Refrain

Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass .... it's about learning to dance in the rain!

Hi everyone on this cool Sunday morning here in Georgia.  We should get up to 62 this afternoon and the last map I saw indicated we were not expected to get the severe cold from the Vortex that will impact a large part of the country. I had a nice restful day yesterday and stayed home all day after coffee.  I did watch part of the Georgia defeat of the Kentucky football team.  It was a good day for Georgia.  We will go to church this morning and then out to lunch and that will be it for today.

Ruth, hope Mel soon gets his boat winterized so that you can get your car back in out of the elements.  Hope the stress lessens for you in the next few days as stress can be very harmful to us.

Carol, I expect that there in Arizona, like they have in Florida, there are always lots of flea market sales.  It sounds like you got a real bargain.  We have many thrift shops around this area as well.

Ruth Ann, it sounds like you may be pushing yourself too hard.  You need to take care of yourself if you are going to be able to help others.  We each have a limit but often test it and get the reminder of what it is when we overdo.

Janet, you fooled me with the red wig.  Pat tried to wear a wig once but just didn't enjoy the experience.  Hope you can soon find a hairdresser that you like.  There certainly is nothing wrong with wearing a wig if you are comfortable with it and I know that many women (and probably men) wear wigs or hair pieces.

Jane, thanks for the devotional thoughts you have provided for us this week.  God is there for us if we allow ourselves to rest in his care.  It is sad that so often we don't seek God's comfort until a crisis overtakes us.

Jeanne Lee

Jane, thank you for the devotional this morning.  A good reminder.   :)

A typical November day today - cool and cloudy.

I'm thrilled with an experiment.  After the Easter lilly given to me by my church died down I cut everything back to "ground level" and kept watering it along with my other plants.  Now there is a green shoot about an inch high!

Hi, friends,

I have rested today. You're right, Larry, I did overdo it on Friday. So, I'm still not up to par.

I dread the cold that is coming this week. It's alright in the 40s, but below that, I think my bloodstream needs antifreeze!

Y'all have a good remainder of the day.

Hi everyone.  It is going to be another beautiful day here in Georgia as the sun is shining and it will go up to about 69 degrees this afternoon.  The housekeepers will be here this morning.  It is unheard of but Pat got up early and has already gone to the store as wanted to get that done before the housekeepers arrived.  Unfortunately, as she was leaving she was backing out and the man in the car opposite was also backing and the bumpers met.  He claims she backed into him.  There was no damage to our car beyond a small scratch but she is upset.  She talked to the insurance company and they will handle it from here.  There was a police report but no tickets were issued.    She has gone for her massage and then we will go out to lunch.  I have a very full evening planned as will meet with a friend around 6 pm and then attend a meeting later this evening if I feel up to it.

I was saddened to read of the passing of Judy McKenna, who a number of years ago was active here.  I always admired her ability to not let her many physical problems appear to bring her down.  Pat, I am glad you plan on attending the funeral and perhaps can be the representative of all her CP friends over the years.

Ruth Ann, it appears you will be much colder up your way than we are suppose to be.  However, it looks like it will be too close for comfort.

Jeanne, you must really have a green thumb but obviously the tender, loving care of your plants doesn't hurt anything.

Jeanne Lee

Not exactly the kind of news I like to get first thing in the morning.  But we know that Judy will be waiting with her lovely smile to greet us one day, and she will be upright and walking tall, suffering no more.

Hi, friends,

I'm also going to miss her. I wondered where she was. May she rest in peace and her family and friends be comforted in their grief.

Today was to be an overly busy day, so I was thankful to learn that several weeks ago, I entered a doctor's appointment an hour later than the actual time . When I phoned to let them know I might be late, I learned about my error, so we rescheduled for next month. Thank goodness!

Now, it's time for me to rest - I'm very tired today.

Love to all,
Ruth Ann

Hi everyone on another beautiful Tuesday morning here in Georgia.  Before the day is done we are to see 70 degrees.
This morning Pat and I will attend a meeting and following that will go to a friends house for an early Thanksgiving dinner with friends.  Everyone is asked to bring something to share.  That will be plenty for today.

Ruth Ann, glad you discovered the error in time before you made the trip to the doctor's.

Hope all who stop by here today have a good day and those of you in the very cold weather stay warm.

Ruth Ann Bice

Hi, friends,

I feel like the lady who had lost the coin in the Bible. I've been searching to and fro for something, and found what I was looking for a few minutes ago. What a relief!

Larry, I, too, am glad I didn't have to go yesterday, that would have been a 25 mile trip for nothing. :)

I feel so relieved, I need to lie down and let the peace of our Lord overtake my stirred up anxiety level.

Y'all have a good rest of the day with our Lord, and in fellowship of others of like mind.

Hi everyone.  It looks like this is going to be our last relatively warm day for a few days.  The forecast is for it to get up to about 67 degrees and sunny this afternoon.  We had a very nice time at the early Thanksgiving get together with friends yesterday at noon.  There were seven of us there with a nice variety of food and great conversation. We will not attend Bible study today as neither of us really are feeling up to going.

Larry Hanna

See that no one has posted since I did yesterday.  Another pretty day but there was a freeze warning for the northern part of our county this morning, no us as we are in the southern part and it is a very large county.  I am going to try to get to my Thursday Men's luncheon at Olive Garden this morning and then have a commitment here at the house late this afternoon and that will be it. Pat is making another visit to the shoe store that is about an hour away.  This is to tweek what was done the last visit, which was a really big help to her.

Hope all who stop by will say hi and that it will be a nice day for all.

Jeanne Lee

That polar vortex is sure cooling off a big chunk of the US!  So far the northeast hasn't been hit too hard (except for northern Maine) - colder and earlier than normal but the snow storms west of us aren't expected to be as severe as some places.  We did get down to about 25F last night but it's already 35F here and may get into the 40's this afternoon.

Hi everyone.  It was 26 degrees at 7 am this Friday morning but it will be a sunny day and will get up into the 40's this afternoon.  I went to coffee with the Friday men's group at McDonald's this morning and now have the rest of the day at home.  Starting yesterday at lunch I started feeling better than I have in in a week or more and today looks like it will be a very enjoyable one.  Pat will be out for awhile this morning and my friend, who was going to come over yesterday afternoon, rescheduled until this afternoon.

Jeanne, it sounds like your weather still isn't too bad.

Carol

We are home... arrived late yesterday but a stop at Safeway first.  Garage door won't open when it is cold - it is severely cold here and set records from the 1800's.  That and the hailstorm of the century that happened in September has made for some massive repairs in this area.

A veggie soup with just a little hamburger is simmering in the crock pot.  Everything is put away, we contacted friends & family and I made an appointment with a throat specialist - this choking has happened too often & I can "feel" something in my throat.  Taking time to care for things right now.

A funeral tomorrow here and it will snow and I am not sure if I even want to ask Don to drive me as he has pain in his left arm from an injury a week ago.  The driving didn't help.  We stopped in Santa Fe because it was getting dark and the roads were bad.  Wind and chill even in middle New Mexico from this cold front.  We must get out to pick up mail today and the garage door is frozen shut - will keep working at it.

Jane:Thank you for the devotion.  It is similar to the message in James I read last night - forever faithful.

We have not heard from Judy McKenna for a long time.  Prayers for all her friends and family.

Time to keep on doing.

Jeanne Lee

Carol, glad to know you're home safe and sound.  It's cold here but I think you'd call it a heat wave.  Sorry to hear about Don's arm and your choking problem.  Praying both will be taken care of soon.

Oh My where is everyone, I expected to spend at least an hour catching up on the weeks postings.  I was one of the missing also. It was a crazy 3 days of work this week 49 animals on Monday 45 on Tuesday and 43 on Wednesday. After the clinic being closed for two weeks  it was a rough day on Monday. Next week we only work Monday and Tuesday because Sunday is low cost vaccination day. That only happens once a month.

Hi everyone.  We have a sunny but cold day on this Saturday here in Georgia.  It is currently 32 degrees.  Today is a big day for Pat as she will go and pick up her finished quilts that she had machine quilted and bound.  Then at noon we are meeting a good friend at Chili's to belatedly celebrate her birthday.  There are a couple of college football games I want to watch including Georgia and Auburn at 7:30 this evening.  So it will be a full day.

Carol, glad to see that you are safely home and that soup sounds like the right thing for such cold weather.  The Denver area hasn't been treated very well in the weather department this fall with winter still to go.

Marilyn, it has been a quiet week here in CP (wanted to write Lake Wobegon for the fans of Garrison Keller).  Maybe things will pick up here this coming week.  It sounds like you were very busy at the clinic.

I watched a very fascinating video this morning of various fish in the ocean.  I found it worth my time to watch it.  Here is the link if you are interested:  http://www.youtube.com/embed/2uUk9K9TQhg

Marilyn

Larry I would have understood the  Lake Wobegon I used to listen to that every weekend., Saturday's I believe.
Nothing much going on here, we will be doing our weekly Walmart run shortly, the cats need their food, Keith needs his peanuts and cake mix. (LOL). This afternoon I need to create a two new graphics and stationery for my groups.

A lovely tribute to Al Moak.  I am better from just "knowing" him on CP.  Just the other day, I almost asked about Al and what what happening to him.  It is to his solid christian life, he preached a sermon the week of passing.  Many thanks to his son, Joel, for sending this message.

Pat

Carol, I do hope that you post your post also in the "Al Moak" topic in Sympathy and Bereavement so that his family will see it.

Hello, everybody!  I am finally back online again.  We had a big windstorm several days ago that knocked out our internet; then it took another few days for them to come out here and find and repair the problem.  But I am back, just in time to say farewell, as we are leaving tomorrow.  Will drive to Oklahoma City, then fly out early Monday for Burma (via San Francisco, Tokyo, Bangkok and finally Burma!)

I had a mishap on Wednesday night.  Grandson Mark was coming home this week as he has to fly and can't come for Thanksgiving.  Diane and Jeff asked if we could have an early Thanksgiving on Thursday while Mark was here.  Anyway, I was in the process of getting preliminary stuff done for the big meal and so was pretty tired.  Darrel decided to go get hamburgers for our supper, and he got me onion rings (I requested those)  Well, they were very greasy, and I should have known better than to eat them.  Anyway, after I went to bed and went to sleep, I woke up feeling really sick and wondered if I would make it to the bathroom in time.  I did, but I was really, really sick, sitting there swaying and praying......and the next thing I remember is waking up and wondering "Where am I?  I stuck out a hand and felt the cool tile floor, thought "what?", then opened my eyes and wondered what that big black place I was seeing was!  I had passed out and fallen off the toilet!  :o  I hit my head on the cabinet, then smashed my poor nose on the tile floor, and my nose had bled a big puddle about 12 x 18 inches across! I had only the night light on, so it looked black to me.

I yelled and yelled for Darrel but he was in the living room watching TV and couldn't hear me.  I was wedged into the space so tightly I could barely move, but after more yelling, I prayed, "Lord, you're going to have to help me get up.  I can't do it by myself."  And finally I managed to get back up on the stool, then to my feet, then hanging onto walls and furniture, to the living room door.  Nearly scared Darrel out of his wits!  I had blood all over me.  And I thought I'd busted my nose; it hurt so bad.  But I'm okay.  Still not really up to par, but doing better, sore all over, and my nose is still bleeding slowly and clotting inside.  But it could have been so much worse, so I am thankful.  It did cause me to miss the 5K Turkey Trot race today, but there is always next year.  And if not, it doesn't matter!  The devil cannot steal my trip from me!

My friend Paula is now in the Wichita hospital where Beth and I spent so much time.  Her husband called and told me it is "touch and go" and I am concerned she may be in heaven before I get home.  :'(

Before I have to ask for publishing rights for this book, I'd best wind it up!  So good to read all your posts again, and I will be in touch again asap!  I love each one of you!

JANET!  You certainly did have a "mishap"!  I can only praise the Lord that you weren't more seriously hurt!  Please be careful as you enjoy your trip to Burma.  We'll miss you while you're traveling and will look forward to hearing all about it when you return.

Ruth Ann Bice

Hi, friends,

I was out and about most of the day yesterday. And, back out with my sister in law today. She's trying to finish up getting her apartment as she would like it to be. I'm just glad I could rest in the car and then pull up to the door when she called saying, "I'm ready to go." She's improved enough that she can make it inside the airlock doors to the apartment tower before they close, so I know she's better.

As for me, I thought I would wait a bit to see if my son gets to call today. Looks like it's not going to happen.

It's so sad that we've lost one of our beloved members, Al Moak. He was a wonderful man.

Well, must go.

Y'all have a good rest of the day.

Ruth Ann

Hi everyone.  We start this Sunday with the sun but the forecast is for rain this starting late this evening and more rain tomorrow.  However, it is to get up to 55 degrees.  We had a really nice time yesterday celebrating the birthday of our friend with a very nice meal at Chili's.  I did enjoy watching Georgia beat Auburn last night.  The game wasn't even close.  Today will be church, lunch and then enjoying the rerun of Don's classic music program.

Marilyn, just going to Walmart on a Saturday is a big job unless you get their early. Pat loves peanuts and recently has made our own trail mix and it is much better than what you buy.

Pat, I do was very saddened to read of the death of Al Moak, who was a very good friend here.  That was a lovely tribute written by his son.

Janet, what an ordeal you experienced and sure glad you were not hurt any worse than you were.  I bet you stay away from onion rings in the future.  Yesterday at Chili's I had a coupon for a free serving of their new onion rings so ordered them.  I didn't have any but the ladies shared a few of them.  I was glad they were free as on the free it showed they would have cost $5.79 and we won't be ordering them again.  I hope you have a wonderful trip but that sure is a lot of flying.  Sorry to read your friend Paula is perhaps at the last stages of her life.

Ruth Ann, it sounds like those airlock doors could be quite dangerous to elderly folks since many move very slowly.  Glad to read she is now well enough to go shopping.

Jeanne, I am with you in offering praise that Janet wasn't hurt anymore than she was.

Janet

Suitcases are loaded, we are all ready to leave.  I am just checking in to tell you to stay safe!  God will watch over us all, that is such a comforting promise!  I'm just waiting for Darrel to finish drinking his tea.  See you soon!

Looking forward to seeing your photos, Janet!
